Meineke is one of the few places open on the weekends. When my check engine light illuminated on a Saturday, I was pleased one of their technicians was available right away. He plugged my car into the care computer and checked the car’s diagnostic codes. He determined that there was an emissions system problem and that it could wait until Monday to address.
At my appointment with them on Monday, Meineke claimed to have done a smoke test for $106 to determine that my gas filler neck needed replacing for almost $1000. When I took my car to a different shop for a comparison quote, their staff started to draft a quote for repairing the car, and then asked who had diagnosed my car trouble. When they heard I had been to Meineke, they were immediately dubious about the diagnosis and asked to check out the car themselves. They questioned if Meineke even had the equipment and training to properly conduct a smoke test! This second shop’s technicians then identified that the only problem with my car was a broken gas cap. I’m glad I only lost a hundred bucks at Meineke.
